Anterior spine surgery, specifically anterior releases and anterior fusions were a commonly taught technique in the past. But with the advent of pedicle screws many young surgeons are unfamiliar with the approach relying on all posterior techniques. More recently vertebral body tethering has re-popularized the approach, though with a newer generation of surgeons that are unfamiliar with its other applications, unfamiliar with the technique, and frequently rely on access surgeons.
